Eric Nichols (http://ericpnichols.com) is a Ph.D. Student of Douglas Hofstadter at CRCC at Indiana University. His thesis work is on a computer model of music cognition called Musicat (following in the tradition of Mitchell and Hofstadter's Copycat model).

Specifically, Musicat is intended to be a novel model of music cognition that simulates the creative processes involved in music. At this stage is does not, however, involve the composition or improvisation of music, but instead the seemingly much simpler and more common act of music perception. See this brief summary for a bit more information.
