Initial Description ― Learning

1. Team

1.1. Members
Gary Knoll, John Lansing, Laoleng Xiong, Keisuke Nishimoto

1.2. Individual Contributions

We will assign individual tasks as needed between development and communication with teachers/students.

2. Motivation

Games are fun, and it is an interesting problem to try and marry the enjoyment of a video game with the rewards of learning.

3. Project Idea

3.1. Goal

Motivate kids to learn more with less effort.

3.2. Objective

To develop a computer-based video game(s) that can be used to teach a simple concept.

3.3. Means

We will be developing applets in Java to display specific concepts in the context of a video game. This way we can deploy our applets on the Internet for use from any location.

3.4. Specific Challenges

Making interesting graphics will be a challenge for us since we are not primarily graphics designers. Also, creating applets that actually teach a concept well will be the greatest challenge of this project.

3.5. Relationship to Course

Design – It will be an inherent design problem for us to create these applets effectively. They will need to be designed so they are fun, motivating and actually teach a concept.
Learning – This project is mostly related to learning since we would like to use this technology as a learning tool.
Collaboration – We will be exploring the collaboration between teachers, developers and students in a learning environment.
