Learning ― Project Progress Report

1 Changes from Proposal

1.1 Goal

To achieve better cohesion with our Independent Research, we will shift our goal from application development to evaluation and analysis of AgentSheets as a learning tool for elementary school children. The main motivation for this change is the fact that our original project plan had little to do with our independent research. We thought we would be able to learn better if we 'reseeded' the findings from independent research into our project, thus leveraging the synergy of doing both the independent research and project in parallel.

In our independent research, we are studying language learning from four different aspects. We think those aspects are not specific to language learning but generally applicable to other learning activities. We will investigate how these aspects differ depending on which learning material is used and thus affect the motivational factor of children's learning.

1.2 Method

First, we will pick up one demo application to be used by children. The topic handled by the application should match what elementary children are supposed to learn at their grade. Then, we will let them play with the application as well as other learning materials, such as text books and paper toys, to evaluate them. We will focus on the motivational factor of these learning tools, but metrics to be used in the evaluation is determined based on the input from our independent research. Finally, we will analyse the result of evaluation and conclude the efficacy of AgentSheets.

2 Schedule

  • Week 4/2-4/8: Interview with Alexander Repenning
  • Week 4/9-4/15: Interview with elementary school teachers, evaluation planning
  • Week 4/16-4/22: Evaluation with children
  • Week 4/23-4/30: Analysis of the evaluation outcome based on the result of independent research
