1) Visit one of the following websites and explore it
2) Briefly discuss for your chosen website:
- MaMaMedia is an education website for children. The learning comes in the form of games, puzzles, cartoon characters, and email that they create and share with their friends. The website is free for everyone and allows children to share their ideas and designs with others from all over the world.
· what did you find interesting about it?
- I thought it was a little like skimmed down version of the ‘squeak’ system we talked about in class. This site as the advantage in that it is web based so that it is more accessible. However, that does limit some of its functionality relative to ‘squeak’.
· in which way is it related to "collaboration"?
This is a collaborative site in that the kids can share all of the creations that they have designed. This allows ideas to be spread and built upon without the constraint of physical proximity.
· how does it compare with the Swiki used for our class?
- It is similar in the fact that both systems allow users to post their ideas/opinions. It is different in that it allows more than just text to be posted. It allows animated characters, games, and puzzles to be posted and played with by other children.
3) have you ever read a book(s) / article(s) (or books) about collaboration? if yes:
· choose the most important one, provide title and one paragraph what you found interesting about it!
- The closest thing that I have read is some of the leadership books by John C. Maxwell "The 17 Indisputable Laws of Teamwork: Embrace Them and Empower Your Team”. This book dealt more with the traditional collaboration that takes place in corporations (i.e., team meetings, networking, brainstorming). However, the principle are the same whether the people are in the same room or on the same website. Individuals each come from different backgrounds and have different approaches to problem solving. By collecting all of the opinions in one location (website or conference room), the ideas can be played against each other and a true innovating solution can be found.
That’s the power of swiki and MaMaMedia. It allows the stimulation of ideas without actually having to schedule a meeting and get a bunch of physical bodies in the same room.
