Edit RSurles.hw9- here.

1.1 I found most interesting that the article brought together the relationship of understanding and learning. Can one learn without understanding? Yes, in a perfunctory manner, but to really learn one must have understanding. Also the consideration of metacognition that each of us must develop in order to apply the learning process.

1.2 Nothing, however I would like to have seen more focus on what learning is, perhaps a universal definition and more on the different styles of learning that individuals have.

2. The main message is that more research in being conducted on the learning process vis-a-vis a learning science. The recognition that there are many different ways to learn and that there is not just one proper way to learn.

3. I cannot say that I have learned MS-Word. I am still in the process of learning the program. The basic process for me learning it was and is based on trial and error. In the beginning more error and now less error. But I cannot say that I have a complete or deep understanding of Word. Just enought to accomplish what is necessary. When I hit a problem I go to a source, i.e. the manual, the internet, or a collogue to get the right answer and how to apply it to my situation.

4. The foundation of my domain of learning has been a combination of empirical, hueristic, instructional, and basic get into it and do it! Two of the most interesting episodes are probably learning to fly and to my amazement how much one learns by teaching.

Learning to fly airplanes was, for me, a very rewarding experience and a tremendous confidence builder. To be able to "kick the tire and light the fire" and go anywhere you want, at anytime, for me was very exciting.

Teaching international finance at the George Washington University and also at the University of Houston was perhaps the most insightful personally, because I realized how much I did not know and how much I learned in the teaching process.

5.1 Learning by being told what to do comprises most of my formal educational learning process. Instruction versus teaching: is there a difference. In the Marine Corps we were instructed 90% of the time and taught 10% of the time. Learning to fly was a combination of instructiona and teaching.

5.2 Self directed learning is the primary way that I learn. It is generally informal learning and is focused on intensive reading of relavant material. It is basically following my interest.

5.3 Discovery learning is the epiphanies of insight that are unintential, but very rewarding. A lot of my personal learning has occured in this manner. Seeing and then understanding the relationships between cause and effect is a wonderful experience.

5.4 Experience is a great learner. I have a personal definition of experience as it related to learning and that is: experience is what you get when you don't expect it! You will have no problem remembering what you experience.

5.5 Informal learning and self directed learning, for me, are very close together in the learning process. Informal learning occurs anywhere and is very personal. It also occurs when I do things with my son; RC flying, fishing, playing paint ball or just sitting around talking about our experiences. Reading books together and discussing what was said and why things took place. What and why character are motivated to do certain things.

5.6 Collaborative learning is a great source for learning new and complex types of things. Collaboration takes place between individuals, generally of differenent backgrounds, for the common purpose of mutual support in getting understanding about a certain phenomenon. I think real estate development is one of the highest forms of collaboration. You have a group with a common goal working together solving many complex problems. And you also are thrown many different obstacles along the way that test everyone's resolve and purpose.

6. The primary source of learning for me is thought experiments. This is supplemented by the computer, internet, collaborators, books and just plain pen and paper.
