Assignment 5

Randell Rivadeneira

1.What did you find
a.Interesting about the article?

I found it very interesting how critiquing can help in designing complex systems. It is true that knowledge is distributed among designers and clients therefore critique becomes important to obtain this distributed knowledge. It was also interesting how embedding critics in design environments can aide the designer to better improve their work, and the discussion of how such system should behave was of great interest. Mainly, because I deal with design systems that have some level of critic. Usually it can be set to critic as the design process occurs, where some time it interferes more than it helps, but if turned off until the end of the design process you end up revisiting a lot of the design.

b.Not interesting about the article?

I found the entire article very interesting. It gave several examples of how embedding critics in design environment might help, and discussed it in a detail manner the pros and cons of such environment.

2.What do you consider the main message of the article?

I believe that the main message was that a computer-based critiquing system can be more effective by embedding it in a design environment. It will help the designer by pointing out problems in the design, by allowing them to be flexible while stating the problem and allowing the designer to access information relevant to its domain-specific design.

3.Are themes discussed in the article which you would like to know more about?

I would certainly like to see the HYDRA system in action. But personally I am more interested in learning how the LISP-CRITIC system would work.

4. Do you know of other papers, ideas, and systems which are closely related to DODEs ? Critiquing?
Rational Purify Plus, it allows you to review code under certain specifications. It then gives you a "critic" of how you can improve it.

5. What does the article say about
design ?

It says that design is a complex task that can be aided through the process of critique. That the knowledge to create a design is distributed, and hence there should be a mechanism to collect all this in the design.

learning ?

It is often the case that through critique of design is a learning process for the designer. That is, when a designer receives a critique it will learn from it.

collaboration ?

Complex designs require the collaboration of all stakeholders. If not, then the design would be incomplete and erroneous. Hence you need the collaboration, and through a computer system like Hydra there is a collaboration between the designer and the computer (with its knowledge base) in order to create a good design.

Innovative media support for these activities?

The whole article is attempting to introduce this innovative system, that allows for all the previous activities to be performed in a improve manner. That is, computer-based critique systems allow for a designer to improve its design, learning and collaboration.

6. Do you have any ideas how this research could / should be extended based on your own knowledge and experience?

It could be extended to obtain results from industry products that already do some critique. Like Microsoft Word Spelling and Grammar utility or Software Design Tools, in some sense they do some critique while you work, or at the user’s own request. It would be interesting to see the results of opinions regarding these systems.
