Homework 1

What did you find interesting about the article?

I'm very interested in the problems posed by collaborative interaction. It seems to me that as technology advances, we will see computational artifacts become ever more pervasive and ubiquitous throughout our environment, to the degree that access to computational artifacts would be taken for granted. However, such a scenario poses problems for modern computer interaction, as it focuses on individual users, rather than collaborative undertakings.

Furthermore, I see modern interaction designs as failing in the task of enabling us to be more productive. As the article states, mush has been made of access to computational power, but comparatively little attention has been paid to passing control in to the hands of the user and thereby engaging them more effectively.

What did you find not interesting about the article?

Overall I was quite intrigued... However, I though possibly too much attention was paid to the traffic simulation example.

What do you consider the main message of the article.

That collaborative design poses a unique challenge to the HCI community, one that will help redefine the way in which fundamental interaction occurs with computational artifacts.

Are themes discussed in the article which you would like to know more about?

Absolutely! I am extremely interested in any work that looks towards extending the means with which we interaction with computers, especially in terms of collaborative work.

Do you know of other papers, ideas, and systems which are closely related to the article and the EDC system?

At CSCL 2002 I saw Hal Eden's work, which seems to have a number of advantages (and disadvantages) with reagrds to the EDC.

What does the article say about design?

That design of collaborative systems must embrace the inherent limitations of group collaboration. That HCI must no apply itself to interaction models that "transcend the human mind" and become more community oriented.

What does the article say about learning?

That learning is best achieved when an individual is actively engaged in discourse.

What does the article say about collaboration?

The collaboration is a key to expanding the utility and power of computers, but that it creates new challenges in HCI that must be surpassed before it might become truly effective.

What does the article say about innovative media supprt for these activities?

That new media support is crucial if collaborative computing is to be an effective tool (see EDC).

Do you have any ideas about how this research could/should be extended?

I would be interested in seeing two areas explored:

  • How to further develop the EDC reflection space to provide even greater support for community development.
  • How to support even more robust group interaction, for instance supplanting the limitations of the modal tool set in the current EDC (transportation example).
