New Foundations for Human-Computer Interaction Research

Important:

with this assignment we split the members of the class into:
  1. producers (students giving answers)
  2. analyzers and summarizers (students evaluating the answers from the other students)

we will rotate these roles - for this assignment, I suggest that
  1. John deRiggi
  2. Jonathan Marbach
are the "analyzers and summarizers"! The "analyzers and summarizers" can do their work individually or jointly


  1. producers: please submit by 10:00am to the class website - please be on time, so the "analyzers and summarizers" can do their work!
  2. analyzers/summarizers: please submit by 2:00pm to the class website

Briefly discuss the following issues:

  1. what did you find
    1. interesting about the article?
    2. not interesting about the article?
  2. what do you consider the main message of the article?
  3. are themes discussed in the article which you would like to know more about?
  4. please describe briefly your understanding of
    1. distributed cognition?
    2. ethnography
    3. active representations (which is the most important example you can think of?)
    4. in future work environments people will pursue their goals in collaboraiton with elements of the social and material world
  5. the article talks about "new foundations" for HCI
    1. please discuss a couple of "old foundations" for HCI
    2. how "new" according to your knowledge are these "new foundations"?
  6. do you have any ideas how this research could / should be extended based on your own knowledge and experience?
