Assignment 7

February 13, 2002


In reading everyones solutions to assignment 7, I found that the most interesting and diverse responses were those given to question 3:

What do you consider the main message of the article?

After reviewing the responses given by members of the class, it was obvious that many different things could be taken from the article.
There was a common theme throughout the responses which was embedded critiquing systems. But, each response discussed different perspectives on embedded critiquing systems. I don't think that any of the responses were incorrect or off basis, it was just interesting to see what each individual took from the article. Following are the responses of each individual in the class:

Payal's Response:


I believe the article demonstrated the need for critiquing and how embedding such critiquing within design environments satisfied many shortcomings present in "stand-alone" critiquing systems.

Tomo's Response:


The right critique has to be made at the right time by the right presentation. Embedded cirtiquing is one promissing approach toward it.

Eric M's Response:


The challenges and advances in embeding critiquing systems into software which aids in design.

Jing's Response:


Embedding critics are most effective when it is used in a domain-oriented design. The embeded critcs can be created from the three different critiquing machinisms, namely, generic, specific and interpretive critics.

John D's Response:


The main message of the article was that embedded critiquing is necessarry for a successful design activity. By embedding critiquing into the design activity, the participants are incorporating a wider range of input and information on the problem they are solving.

Jon M's Response:


The article demonstrates that embedded, domain oriented critiquing mechanisms can be an integral and highly benficial part of the design process in solving complex problems.

As you can see each individual retained different main themes from the paper that all surrounded embedded critiquing systems.
