1. what did you find

1.1. interesting about the article?

“The clashing point of two subjects, two disciplines, two cultures ought to produce creative chaos.” We find this to be an intriguing way to look at the problem of heterogeneous groups. In most of our experience at school, we tend to group with people that we are compatible with. Perhaps by selecting people from different backgrounds, solutions to some problems may be easier to find.

We also found it interesting that this subject is not further along and in use within communities. It seems with the extreme amount of non-technical people around our country, things like this would allow the distributed learning and assimilation of knowledge.

1.2. not interesting about the article?

We did not feel that the Problem diagnosis section of the article needed to be as in depth as it was. Also, there was much redundancy in some areas; over-simplification of some concepts.

2. what do you consider the main message of the article?

That research in the field of HCI has applications in all facets of society, and also that much remains to be discovered in the field.

3. are themes discussed in the article which you would like to know more about?

We would like to learn more about ‘understanding motivation and rewards necessary to engage people in a design culture’.

4. what did you find interesting about the “EDC” system?

We found the creation of a new language specifically for the EDC quite intriguing. The behind-the-scenes computational functionality in general would be very interesting to learn about. Also, we really liked the idea of an electronic whiteboard, as well as there being separate spaces for design and reflection.

5. do you know of other papers, ideas, and systems which are closely related to the article and the “EDC” system?

Unfortunately, no.

6. what do the article and the associated system say about
6.1. design

This article asserts that current design projects are so large (and that the design process so hard to learn) that they cannot be resolved without groups of people working together to find a solution. The EDC system is an attempt to facilitate group work in an efficient manner.
The article also points out that it is important for the system to be able to adapt to the users situations over time. The design of the system cannot be static.

6.2. learning

This article says that two people of differing backgrounds and experience levels can learn from one another by exploiting the symmetry of ignorance. The EDC system makes this easier to do.
Additionally, we get the feeling that this proves the point from the previous article that learning is a collaborative process. And that by interacting with things, be that a system or a person, it is important to do things when learning, not simply read and apply.

6.3. collaboration

The article makes a very strong case for learning and problem solving in groups. We get the impression that the solutions that were developed in the EDC would have never been as thoroughly tested if it had not been for the collaboration. Collaboration allows large design projects to be feasible and also makes the learning process easier. The EDC system facilitates collaboration in the attempt to enhance learning and streamline the design process.

6.4. innovative media to support these activities?

As with the previous three answers, EDC is an example of innovative media intended to facilitate the design process and the learning process by providing an efficient means of collaboration.

7. do you have any ideas how this research could / should be extended (based on your own knowledge and experience)?

To expand on the whole route idea, we think it could be used to map out air traffic in a new way, the same way it was used in the article with buses. This may help out the airline industries current crisis by cutting cost and making available to people who travel often a way to easily voice their opinions on what flights should be going where and when.
