CiteSeer is free and provides a list of references to other potentially free articles. I like this source for its convenience, however, it's also not the most thorough of the three sources. If I search for recent articles, I usually don't find much published in the last couple years on CiteSeer.

ACM has some nice resources, but it’s by subscription. The abstracts are helpful, and it is possible to get the articles when you’re logged on at CU. But the search seems a little rigid. I had trouble finding articles that I knew existed.

Google scholar seems to be the most thorough of the three sources and the search is easy to use. Some of the articles are free, some are from subscription services. If I'm doing a literature search, I usually start with Google scholar.
