Citeseer: Free, but not as thorough as Google Scholar. Seems to have a more selective indexing than Google Scholar, which could be viewed as an advantage or a disadvantage. Has nice features under "statistics" where the user can view the top articles in many specific categories, such as "Natural Language Processing" or "Agents".

Google Scholar – Free, thorough, and accurate. Even includes papers not hosted on official academic sites (could be an advantage or a disadvantage). Also has full-featured advanced search, including the function to indicate in which field to perform the search.

ACM – This resource seems to show mainly ACM publications. As such, it is a necessary resource, but is also limited. Also, it charges a fee for membership or a one-time use fee for downloading a given article. One nice feature: a user can create a "virtual binder" to store his or her favorite set of papers.
