Increase student-teacher collaboration through an interactive annotation note system

Project Proposal

Purpose: Increase both student-teacher and student-student collaboration through an interactive annotation note system.

One of the common ways students get information from instructors is from class notes posted online. While these notes help precipitate some knowledge from the instructor to the students, it does not allow for any flexibility or addition. Students usually have few or no ways to electronically share their knowledge with other students, and there is no facility for them to augment the teachers notes with more information. Class notes usually encompass on a small part of the overall curriculum. With the right tools, students as well as instructors and TA's can make additions, such a comments, additions, and corrections, to the preexisting class notes, and share these additions with others.

  • Teacher is able post a general outline of notes for the current lecture
  • As the lecture progresses, students in the class are able to add annotations to the posted notes
  • These additions to the notes are immediately updated to everyone who has the notes open (using web 2.0 technologies, like AJAX)
  • Through this system students are able to collaboratively work together to gain a more complete and accurate understanding of the material
  • Students will be able to highlight words or phrases and then right click and say "add annotation"
  • The word or phrase will then become highlighted in the document, when users hover over it, a bubble will appear and show the added content
