The most interesting thing about the paper is the new thinkings about human learning activity, and how to create and incorporate various kinds of environment and multimedia supported by computer techniques. The authors point out that the "Gift Wrapping" appoach of using modern technology in education will not change the quality of human learning activity. The real the challenge on this issue, as illustrated by the title of Figure 3 "Rethinking & Reinventing Education", is to think beyond the popular concepts created by Skinner & Taylor to find a catalyst for fundamentally rethinking what education should be in the next century.

I find every point of arguments in the article interesting.


2 What do you consider the main message of the article?


The change of our society into a knowledge and information society will eventually lead to the fundamental changes of human learning activity. The old thinking on this subject is no longer suited for the dramatic changes brought on our society by the development of computer and other technologies in the past decades. The focus is how to use techonologies to transcend the "Gift-Wrapping" Approach into a "Learning and Intelligent Systems" that focus on " making learning a part of life", and how to use new media, new social structures, and new technologies to transform the current education system into a high quality of human learning experience

Born in Vienna in 1926, Illich grew up in south-central Europe. He studied natural science, philosophy, theology,
and history. During the 1950s he worked as a parish priest among Puerto Ricans in New York City, then served
as vice-rector of the Catholic University of Puerto Rico. During the 1960s he founded centers for cross- cultural
studies, first in Puerto Rico then in Cuernavaca, Mexico. During the 1970s his Centro Intercultural de
Documentación (CIDOC) became an internationally respected focus for intellectual discussion. Since the 1980s
he has divided his time between Mexico, the United States, and Germany. He currently holds an appointment as
Visiting Professor of Philosophy and of Science, Technology, and Society at Penn State. He also teaches at the
University of Bremen

van Illich became well known in 1970, when he published Deschooling Society which argued that the
top-down management of schools makes students powerless - and that the same top-down management is
typical of the modern, technological economy that prevents people from learning. Tools for Conviviality made
the same criticism of technology generally. Along with Energy and Equity, this book made Ivan Illich one of the
most important theorists of the radical ecology movement of the 1970s.
