Researchers like Linn (2002) have found that when students are taught skills in one subject area, they were unable to apply these to other subject areas. To what extent might this be due to teachers ignoring metacognition during instruction?

In our opinion, a visual representation of the similarities in the inquiry and thought processes across subjects, like this graphic organizer, would help more students think critically and independently. More so, when more teachers actively solicit their reflections on the similarities between thinking and problem-solving across subjects. Recently, when one of us (Nathan) asked his students if any of them knew something similar to the iterative design process in technology, one of them remarked that it seemed similar to the outline and multiple drafts they wrote for essays, before sharing a final satisfactory draft.
